From the mid-’50s to 1963, Americans learned about the Nation of Islam (which an unfriendly press soon dubbed “the Black Muslims”) from televised snippets of speeches by the minister of its Harlem mosque—the light-skinned former convict Malcolm X. After his death in 1965, Malcolm quickly became a black icon, a powerful symbol of racial redemption. But when he served as chief spokesman for the Nation of Islam, the man born Malcolm Little was most influential as a bold critic of what he saw as the dangerous integrationist illusions put forth by Martin Luther King, Jr.

A black man who made a sexual comment to a white woman was considered tantamount to a rapist. The slightest transgression of the code might lead to a lynching tree. The hypocrisy was glaring.
