The exterior ditch, which also served as a trench, was 10ft wide and 6ft deep. In front of this was a rough palisade and glacis. Behind the parapet was a 2ft-high firestep and a 20ft-wide terreplein. Beyond this was a 6ft-high and 12ft-wide traverse, which enclosed the parapet at its western end while leaving the eastern end open.
